India v/s South Africa – one-off T20I match at Durban on 9th january 2011: India won by 21 runs
It was an easy win for India in one-off T20I match at Durban, after long and struggling Test Series, against South Africa on Sunday. India won the match by 21 runs as South Africa chasing the moderate target of 169 only managed to put 147/9 on board in their innings. Match was historic as it was the first cricket match at Moses Mabhida Stadium, a 2010 football World Cup venue.
It was the farewell match for 33-year-old Ntini, first non-white player to play cricket for South Africa, who received great reception by the 47,000-capacity crowd at the stadium. Ntini was unable to take wicket at T20I match but in his career spanning more than 12 years he played 101 Test Matches and has taken 390 wickets during his Test career at a 28.82 average, as well as 266 wickets in 173 ODIs he played for South Africa.
23 year old Rohit Sharma was the top-scorer for India with 53 before he was caught by Ntini. Sharma was also awarded man of the match and in the IPL auction he was bought by Mumbai Indians to play in the season 4 of the world’s richest cricket tournament.
After the match there was a program organized by the South Africa cricket board to honor first South African black player Ntini and Indian Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar. President of South Africa Jacob Zuma was the chief guest at the awards function. Presence of the Bollywood celebrities added the glamour to the function. Bollywood king Shahrukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor were few among many celebrities present at the stadium.
Makhaya Ntini was honored by the South African Cricket Board for his contributions to the world cricket. A bowling machine was donated to his cricket academy for the bowlers. Ntini was overwhelmed by the respect given to him and thanked his family and friends for the support during his long career and further added that it’s party time for him now.Score card for the Match
