Indian National Flag: Tricolour

UPA government in center and Omar Abdullah managed to prevent the flag hoisting by BJP at Lal Chawk in Srinagar but the leaders of Bhartiya Janta Party unfurled the tricolour at Kathua in Jammu. Ekta Yatra by youth wing of BJP came to and end on Wednesday when senior leaders from BJP Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Ananth Kumar, Shanta Kumar and Anurag Thakur were released from the arrest along with over 200 party workers.

Earlier leaders were detained by the government of Jammu and Kashmir and was in custody for one night after which they were released. Later in the day they addressed a press conference in Jammu and rejected the offer by J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah to attend the official flag hoisting.

Leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said that the party workers of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), BJP’s youth wing, were not only stopped by the police and state state government on Jammu & Kashmir but also were brutally assaulted by them when they tried to reach Lal Chawk in Srinagar to hoist National Flag there on Republic Day.

Yatras have always benefited BJP in one sense or another and this time around the story is not different as they found a new young leader in form of BJYM president Anurag Thakur. The youth leader was felicitated by the party leadership at their national headquarters late on Wednesday night.

BJP party workers were stopped and arrested several times before they reach the spot at Lal Chawk, same was true for Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Yasin Malik and his followers. They were also arrested when they tried to reach the Lal Chawk in Srinagar to try to prevent BJP workers to hoist the national flag.

The official Republic Day ceremony for the state of J&K was held at the Bakshi Stadium in the capital where state finance minister Abdul Rahim raised the national flag. Srinagar remained tense but peaceful through out the day amid heavy security around Lal Chawk and Bakshi Stadium.

Firs time the national flag was hoisted at Lal Chowk by BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi at the end of the Ekta Yatra from Kanyakumari to Srinagar on Republic Day in 1992. After that the tradition was continued by the para-military forces until 2008 when newly appointed chief minister Omar Abdullah discontinued it.
