Brian Lara, Sourav Ganguly, Chris Gayle, Jesse Ryder and Herschelle Gibbs were the stars who went unsold in IPL-4 auction in Bangalore today. Indian Premiere League’s season four auctions have already created lot of buzz in media and these unsold players left behind will be part of the discussings in the newspapers during the days to come.
It was the tragic moment for Lara as he decided to play in the IPL for the first time and remained unsold at the end of the auction. Both Ganguly and Gayle were the marquee players with the base price of $400,000 reserved for them. Both of them were the part of Kolkata Knight Riders in the first three editions of the Indian Premiere League.
Delhi Daredevils opener for the first three seasons of the IPL Gautam Gambhir fetched a record $2.4 million from Kolkata Knight Riders in the season 4 auctions and was the highest paid cricketer for this season. Gambhir was among four Indians who crossed the $2 million barrier at the fourth edition, others were Yusuf Pathan($2.1 million), Robin Uthappa($2.1 million) and Rohit Sharma($2 million).
$1 million men for the IPL-4 were New Zealander Ross Taylor, Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene, South Africans AB de Villiers and Jacques Kallis, Indians Yuvraj Singh and Irfan Pathan, and Australian Cameron White. There were more than 10 players sold for more than $1 million this year. Twelve of the all players retained their original franchieses for the season 4 of the high profile cricket extravagenza.
Many of the cricketing experts believed that V.V.S Laxman who had also increased his base price to $400,000 would too go unsold but new team Kochi took him for their side at the base price. Royal Challengers Bangalore’s key player from last three seasons Rahul Dravid also fetched a slightly higher price than his base tag of $400,000 with Rajasthan Royals. They included him in the side for $500,000 for the season four.
