NEW DELHI: Lieutenant General P K Rath,former Deputy Chief of Army Staff-designate, was found guilty by an Army court martial on Friday in the Sukhna land scam. He found guilty on three counts- issuing No Objection Certificates, signing MoU with the builder and not informing command headquarter.

He become the highest ranking serving officer in the Indian Army to be convicted for corruption charges. Sentencing for the case is scheduled in Army court martial on Saturday. He signed MoU with Geetanjali Trust for construction of the educational institute in Army and never informed his superiors in the Eastern Command about the proposed agreement.

The court martial, headed by a panel of five Lieutenant Generals headed by Lieutenant General I P Singh, delivered its judgment in Shillong after about an 8 month long hearing in the case. Case dealt with the illegal allotment of 70-acre plot adjacent to the military station to a private retailer in 2008.

In this case then Chief of Army Staff General Deepak Kapoor censured Lieutenant General Ramesh Halgali and 5 officers who blew the whistle in the Sukna land scam, biggest in the history of Indian Army.
