A.Raja was arrested by Central bureau of Investigation in relation with the 2G spectrum allocation scam when he was Telecom minister in UPA government. Despite of his arrest on charges as serious as criminal conspiracy, the DMK is standing by him and thinks that he is innocent. Party strongly believed that the arrest doesn’t prove him of guilt in charges against him in the 2G scam.
DMK also Accused the opposition parties in parliament of blowing the matters related with 2G scam out of proportion and trying to malign the image of their party. DMK said opposition’s only evidence against Raja was the CAG report tabled in Parliament and that doesn’t prove anything and doesn’t make him guilt. Party general meeting was held on Chennai today where they said opposition parties are unnecessarily targeting Raja.
During the General Council met in Chennai on Thursday a resolution was passed by the DMK party workers and members stating that the arrest doesn’t mean Raja is guilty. Sources also conformed that A.Raja had offered to resign as DMK propaganda secretary following his arrest on Wednesday and most likely his resignation will be accepted today.
Raja and two of his aides were arrested by the CBI in New Delhi on Wednesday for their role in the controversial 2G spectrum allocation of bandwidth to the telecom service providers in India. He was forced to resign on 14th November, 2010 after the CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) indicted him in the scam. Raja, then Telecom minister, is also charged for causing losses between Rs.58,000 crore and Rs.1,76,000 crore to the exchequer.
After his arrest yesterday party workers informed media that it is not going to effect much the dalit votes and rural voters as they are not much interested in 2G scam. Party supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M Karunanidhi, also conformed that if proven guilty than only the necessary action will be taken against Raja.
A section of the DMK within the party also wanted Raja’s ouster after his name was mentioned in the 2G spectrum scam. Some party leaders including Karunanidhi’s son M.K. Alagiri wanted Raja be sacked from all party posts before the upcoming elections in Tamil Nadu.
